How It Works
The medicine activates dopamine D2 receptors on prolactin producing cells in the pituitary. This suppresses prolactin secretion. When excess prolactin has reduced reproductive hormone signalling, lowering prolactin can allow that signalling to recover.
Prolactin Reduction and Sexual Function
The medicine lowers elevated prolactin. In men with hyperprolactinemia, correcting that excess can improve prolactin related sexual symptoms and restore reproductive hormone function. The relevant effect depends on prolactin actually being elevated and contributing to the problem.
- Reducing pituitary prolactin release.
- Correcting prolactin excess in appropriate patients.
- Allowing recovery of hormone signalling suppressed by hyperprolactinemia.
Post Cycle Therapy
Cabergoline is not a routine PCT medicine. Its role is treating a demonstrated prolactin disorder, which is different from general testosterone suppression after a steroid cycle. Recovery treatment depends on identifying which hormonal abnormality is present.
Side Effects
Nausea, headache, dizziness and low blood pressure on standing are possible. Important risks include cardiac valve disease, fibrotic disorders and impulse control problems such as compulsive gambling or sexual behaviour. These concerns are relevant to exposure and individual susceptibility.
