How It Works
The peptide activates melanocortin receptors, including receptors in central nervous system pathways associated with sexual responses. Its exact mechanism for improving sexual desire is not fully defined. It acts through central receptor signalling rather than the direct PDE5 inhibition used by sildenafil or tadalafil.
Sexual Desire and Arousal
The peptide has clinical evidence for improving sexual desire in a defined group of premenopausal women. Earlier male studies also demonstrated erectile responses. These effects concern sexual function, with no established muscle building or training performance benefit.
- Activating melanocortin receptor pathways.
- Improving sexual desire in the studied female population.
- Producing erectile responses in early male clinical studies.
Post Cycle Therapy
The peptide does not restore LH, FSH or natural testosterone production and has no established role as PCT. A sexual response while using it does not establish recovery from androgen suppression. Hormonal causes of reduced libido are a separate question.
Side Effects
Nausea, flushing, headache, vomiting and injection site reactions are possible. Bremelanotide can temporarily raise blood pressure and lower heart rate. Focal skin darkening can persist. Cardiovascular disease and uncontrolled hypertension are especially relevant to its safety profile.
